The waters surrounding the Aleutian Archipelago are wild, humbling, sacred, and rich in gifts. I had the fortune of working on a ship in these waters one summer, and found myself floored by the incredible beauty and bounty of the place. Volcanos actively spouting ash and fishing lines heavy with salmon and pacific cod and halibut. Walruses and whales emerging from the waves, otters bobbing amongst bull kelp. The islands I worked amongst have been inhabited by the Unangax Nation for thousands of years - a fact that has touched me deeply, and helped me to appreciate how resilient and capable people must be to thrive in such a powerful place.
