being on the land, and truly listening to indigenous knowledge in the process of being on the land.
I painted “Abundance” from a concept my friend, Deenaalee Hodgdon and I had long been discussing. Deenaalee is Deg Xit’an Athabaskan and Supiaq from the villages of Gitr’ingithchagg (Anvik) and Qinuyang (South Naknek), Alaska, and is the creator behind On the Land, a podcast centered on Indigenous Voices and relationships to the land. Abundance is a celebration of our love of paddling powerful rivers, the feeling of protected by immense mountains. Of the joy of berry picking, being gifted with a caribou, or of eating salmon we took from the river or ocean with our own hands.
We worked with Skida to create these glowing pieces, and then together with our co-conspirators at Coalition Snow we launched this collaboration to support the Indigenous Backcountry Scholarship, a scholarship for Indigenous communities to increase their access to avalanche training and backcountry skiing and riding.
