Sitka Sound remains one of the most powerful, soulful land and seascapes I have encountered in Alaska. Mount Edgecumb, a Fuji-shaped conical volcano, stands sentinel over the bull-kelp draped shoals, between which whales and schools of herring coexist. Sein fishing fleets pass between rugged islands dressed in Sitka Spruce and Yellow Cedar, and the fiery sunsets paint the sky flaming oranges and pinks and golds.
